Microphone Modification II Tackling the”THE BOOF HEAD” AKA O.P.R LOLLIPOP
These Mics are sold under various brands, like Alctron,Nady RSM 4 ,Golden Age Project R2 MK II , Cascade Fathead, etc etc etc…..The sound is warm silky and explosive! It also shares the very same ribbon motor as a many other chinese ribbon mics!! It comes with a shock mount and a wooden case and is suited for guitar cabinets, drum over-heads, vocal, piano, horns, strings, and much more.
The Acoustic modification process involves removing two of the three layers of metal screening that has been put in place to protect the ribbon from wind blasts and avoid any returns. but as with the previous microphone the sound is opened up and becomes more airy with these filters removed as there are less reflections occurring within the head basket. In this case the very slack ribbon was brought to correct tension and word out there is that a good 50% of these type of mics suffer from poor ribbon tension this should be checked and fixed if you have one of these mic’s but even better replace the ribbon all together as it is not with 1.8um Al as is done in all of my U-mod and F-Mod mics as the stock ribbons are the weakest link in the signal chain even more then the transformers!. Take a look through the photos of the modification process. I have two audio Examples of the modification before and after and more coming soon! Also Stay tuned for the Lundahl Upgrade!!
Please note that no FX or EQ has been applied to any of the audio examples below
